Pharmaceutical Chemistry Research

Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry is comprised of two branches whereby the first, Medicinal chemistry covers the aspects of new drug discoveries and development and the second, Pharmaceutical Analysis deals with analysis of raw materials as well as finished products. The department inculcates in students a wide range of knowledge of chemistry ranging from basic understanding of physical, organic and inorganic chemistry to the synthesis and analysis of the drug molecules. Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry has arrayed and well-accorded 4 laboratories for UG students and a research laboratory for PG and Ph.D. students.

Various instruments are available in the departmental laboratories for UG such as Digital Balance, stirrer, water-bath, high-speed centrifuge, Potentiometer, Conductometer, Digital pH meter, Poloarimeter, Refractometer, Karl Fischer Titrator, Colorimeter, Flame Photometer, Hot air blower, Vacuum oven, Cyclometer, Melting Point Apparatus, etc. PG research laboratories include various sophisticated instruments like High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) with PDA detector, High Performance Thin Layer Chromatography (HPTLC), Spectrofluorimeter, UV-Visible Spectrophotometer, Gas chromatography, etc.

  • Analytical method development and validation for various drugs such as anti-diabetic drugs, anti-ulcer,anti-hypertensive,anti-depressant,anti-bacterial etc.
  • Study of impurity profile of drugs.
  • Isolation and characterization of herbal compounds using various chromatographic techniques.
  • Synthesis and characterization of important anti-viral drugs and their intermediates.
  • Synthesis and characterization of important anti-inflammatory drugs and their intermediates.
  • Development and validation of analytical methods for estimation of various drugs in bilogical fluids .
  • Drug discovery through virtual screening of drugs and their intermediates.

An insight into activities

The department has inherited a gist of fetching various grants from various agencies. Two of the departmental faculties have received the Career awards from AICTE and has generated revenue of almost Rs. 21 lakhs. The department emphasizes the quality in doing the practical work for UG students, while it encourages the PG students to participate and present the research as well as review papers in various meetings. Faculties of the department are actively involved in the aforesaid research areas.
